Nice Carnival History

Nice Carnival

While there are no clear records available with whom we can attribute the origin of carnival, it is widely believed that the gala event started in 1294, when Charles Anjou, the Count of Provence, stayed in Nice and wrote that he had spent ‘the joyous days of carnival’. The Carnival of Nice was reinvented in 1873, following the formation of a committee led by Alexis Mossa and his son, Gustav-Adolf Mossa. From then, day-night colorful parades, satirical floats, masquerades, and other competitions became part of the Nice Carnival.
